Thoughts on Thrift

22 September, 2009

Buying things “used” is a great way to obtain things we might otherwise not be able to afford.  What wouldn’t I buy used?  Well, I have thought about that and I really can’t think of anything I absolutely would not buy used.  I am careful about electronic things, but if it’s cheap enough, sometimes it’s worth a try.  I don’t buy opened hand creams, shampoos, etc.  I am also a fanatic about washing everything that I buy used.  After all, you don’t know where it’s been!

Through the years, when I find a spectacular deal on clothes, I will pack away larger sizes.  It’s so nice when the kids have outgrown their clothes that I don’t have to travel farther than my crawl space to find their size.  I am not a fashion expert.  Instead, I prefer to buy a more classic style of clothing that never goes out of style.   Buttons and hemlines can always be changed if necessary and a little ironing goes a long way in making something look like brand new!

I also have learned to patch holes in the knees of blue jeans and they actually look quite nice and last a long time too.  In fact, one day my friend called the house when I wasn’t home and talked to one of my boys asking “Does your Mom let you wear cut-offs and would you like some that my boys have outgrown?”  He said he would check with me.  When I got home the question was put to me this way, “Mom, are we allowed to wear cut-offs, and what are they?”  I laughed so hard.  We call this ”Swiss Cheese Education” in our house (full of holes).  Obviously, I had been patching their jeans for so long, that they had never heard of cut-offs!
